Four Chaplains Observance
This event was sponsored on Sunday Feb. 5th, 2023, at St. Ann's church in Windham. In 1948 Congress designated the Sunday nearest to Feb. 3rd to be "The Four Chaplains Day". American Legion Posts throughout the country collaborate to celebrdate this event, which happened during World War 2, and is an everlasting example of heroism, comradship, and interdenominational faith. During the sinking of an Army troopship, 4 chaplains who were on board (two Protestant, one Jewish Rabbi, one Catholic) provided their lifejackets to four frightened soldiers. The chaplains and many others went down with the ship.
For 2024 we plan to work with additional area houses of worship to bring this important story to more people.
