Obituary for Melvin William Greenier
Mel W Greenier, age 78, from Windham Maine, formerly from Westbrook, Yarmouth, and Cape Elizabeth, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023. He was born in Caribou, ME was the first of six children of Patricia R. (LaGasse) Greenier and Melvin O. “Casey” Greenier. A 1963 graduate of Caribou High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in the fall of 1963 after helping his father and grandfather with their farm’s fall harvest of potato crops.
He proudly served his country, graduating from electronics school at Ft Monmouth, NJ and Keesler AF Base in Biloxi, MS then stationed in Bangkok & Korat Thailand, Saigon, Viet Nam and finally with the US Strike Command in Tampa, Florida. He was honorably discharged in the September of 1966, just in time for the fall harvest.
Upon his return to civilian life, he secured a job at Aroostook Auto Parts in Caribou and later, in May of 1969 with The Gates Corp of Denver, Colorado with whom he traveled extensively around the country and rose through the management ranks to New England Sales Manager, retiring at the end of December 2010 after 42 years with the company.
He was a member of American Legion, Field-Allen Post 148 in Windham, ME. and elected Post Commander from 2013-2019. He was 2nd District Americanism Officer 2014-2019. He founded a new American Legion Auxiliary Unit 148 in 2014 as well as formed the Windham Post 148 Honor Guard. He also created a new Post website in 2014 and helped grow Post membership by 10% every year from 2014 to 2019. Most recently he was Treasurer of the Windham Veteran’s Association.
Mel enjoyed traveling the United States with his wife Diana. He loved his family and enjoyed his coin collection, wilderness camping on Indian Pond and Fly fishing the East Outlet of the Kennebec River. He coached the Cape Elizabeth Little League Tigers baseball team, served as Director of Baseball for 11 years and enjoyed coaching his three sons in little league baseball and basketball.
Mel leaves behind his spouse of over 55 years, Diana M. (St. Pierre) Greenier and sons, Jeffrey Greenier, his wife Michelle of Turner, ME and granddaughters Megan, Macey, Meagan; James Greenier of Jackson, MS. and granddaughter Lilly; Jon Greenier, his wife Michelle of Gorham, ME and grandchildren Josh, Stephanie and Lauren; great grandchildren Brentley and Mila; Brother Robert of Caribou, sister Tina Howell of Acworth, GA. As well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Mel is predeceased by his brothers Terry and Brian as well as sister Sharon.
Visitation will be held from 6:00PM – 8:00PM Sunday June 25, at the Windham Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee, 434 River Road, Windham. A private graveside service will be held at the Maine Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Augusta. In Lieu of flowers gifts in Mel’s name may be made to the Windham Veterans Center, 35 Veterans Drive, Windham, ME 04062.
